Sam Westbrook Sam Westbrook graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1963 and then spent three years at Trinity College, Oxford, England as a Rhodes Scholar. At Oxford he played rugby for his college team, traveled extensively in Europe and completed two advanced degrees in physics. Sam earned his pilot’s wings in 1967 and was assigned to the F-111 tactical fighter aircraft, the Air Force’s newest weapons system at that time.
Sam’s twenty-eight years in the Air Force as a pilot, policy analyst, and senior manager included five years in Washington, DC, with a year on the National Security Council staff. He ran inter-agency staff groups reviewing national policy and helped with the preparation of congressional testimony, as well as managing large, multi-disciplinary organizations. Using these experiences and insights gained while serving on the Board of Directors of a large insurance and financial services company and as an advisor to a dotcom start-up in Seattle, he helps entrepreneurs think through how to get information about and how to approach other organizations, governmental or commercial, to gain needed support.
From 1984-1986 Westbrook commanded the largest F-111 tactical fighter wing in the Air Force, based in England. During his two years at the helm he helped plan and then execute the first overt use of military force against state sponsored terrorism, Operation El Dorado Canyon, the joint Air Force/Navy strike against Libya in 1986. His unit also took part in a test program to fast track the approval of suggestions from members of the organization for increasing productivity, and the program’s success made a lasting impression on Sam of the link between participation, innovation, and results.
In addition to his graduate degrees in physics from Oxford University, Sam has attended several professional development schools and courses. He was the Commandant of Cadets at the Air Force Academy and later oversaw all Air Force undergraduate pilot, navigator, and survival training. He has taught and practiced leadership and organizational development and brings these skills to the entrepreneurial arena, as well.
Westbrook’s commercial management experience covers several industries. He was the general manager of a metals recycling firm in western Massachusetts. He was the president of PAR Government Systems Corporation, a high technology company in New Hartford, New York. Sam was vice president and general manager of an aerospace hydraulic power control and generation equipment business. Each of the companies Sam was with were having problems with downturns in the business cycle or paradigm shifts, and he was able to find ways to cope. In his consulting, he finds ways to address similar problems, and he now helps inventors, entrepreneurs, and companies understand how to develop new business by extending core competencies into other areas. He shares ideas about how to find, evaluate and attract partners who can help move technology to market more quickly and efficiently.
