I’ve had occasion to speak to thousands of people who are occupying leadership positions. Did you catch that? Some in leadership positions aren’t necessarily effective leaders. My perspective is possibly a bit biased and myopic, but even so, I’m absolutely shocked at the staying power of obsolete methodology. I continue to ask myself, “how is it possible that these dinosaurs continue to roam the face of the earth?”

We were preparing to run a survey for a larger medical organization. I received an email from the hospital’s CEO, someone who’d been in the position for many years, which included the following two comments:

    1. “I don’t like asking employees whether their manager is conforming to standards. Our managers have never been told there are standards in the first place.”
    2. “The survey uses the term ‘leader.’ This will create confusion around here.”

Excellent information, Bob, well presented and useful. I need a copy for our City Manager, who will benefit greatly.

Just finished reading HOW THE MIGHTY FALL. It’s amazing – how many individuals and organizations feel compelled to over complicate and take their eye off the ball.

This was like attending a reresher course in “being a focused leader”. A great start for my new year at work. What I really appreciate is the the concise simplified manner in which the basics are explained. You are so right; this is not rocket science. I find that people who are moved through the business or hired as a manager and do not have any management training are always the hardest to get on board for evolution. They feel threatened and therefore do not participate in effective leadership. Your methods are so positive and I think that works wonders. Listening to these chapters gives me energy to proceed. Thanks

Mary, you made my day… you hit right on our intent. Just getting started on Chapter Three and then we’re into some specifics about observing. Observing is all about gathering the science so issues and opportunities can be identified. Have a superb 2010!
